Irvine City Council Safe Gun Storage City Ordinance Update

A big THANK YOU to all of those that joined OCGO in person or via Zoom at the Irvine City Council Meeting this Tuesday April 25th to speak in opposition to the proposed Safe Gun Storage Ordinance that was on the agenda! It was a very long meeting, with our item being late into the night at almost 11PM. We appreciate your dedication to have your voices heard, & it was vital in getting the item tabled! Special thanks to Mayor Pro Tem of Aliso Viejo Mike Munzing for coming to speak as well!

While it was not completely struck down, it was tabled for further discussion at a later date after further review, and Councilmember Carroll, did recall the vote at 12:30am to vote No on even proceeding with tabling the item for a later date. Thank you Councilmember Carroll for putting your opposition on record!

We will keep everyone informed on how this ordinance progresses and when it will be coming before the council again so that you can join us again at the meeting.

In the meantime, please continue to email the Irvine councilmembers your opposition to this ordinance. The more voices of opposition that are heard, the less likely they are to move forward with this ordinance. If you need help drafting an email or a template, please reach out to us via [email protected]

Desi Bergman guest hosts and recaps NOTMESD’s events in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The month ended with a cocktail hour with Sheriff Martinez who discussed self defense and CCW’s in San Diego.

OCGO Executive Director Heather Hawke recaps the recent hearing at Irvine City Council on a proposed ‘Safe’ storage law. The poorly named ‘Safe Storage’ proposal actually does nothing new to keep unauthorized people from accessing firearms and decreases safety when the law-abiding need to defend themselves. Artemis Defense Institiute Launches The Sheep Dog Program – Honoring Dr. John Cheng

Artemis is raising money through the sale of their ‘Sheep Dog’ patches, and the proceeds will be used to spread awareness, empower, educate and train individuals and families of first responders (to include civilian ccw permit holders) through the ‘Sheep Dog Program’ administered through ‘The Daughters of Artemis’ (a Non Profit Organization).

WHAT IS THE SHEEP DOG PROGRAM?
As many of you may know, we lost, Dr. John Cheng last May to an active killer who intended to kill innocent people attending church services at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods.  Dr. Cheng, a CCW holder was unarmed that day.  Unarmed, he acted with extreme bravery and charged at the killer, saving others, but sacrificing himself.  We sincerely believe that had he been carrying concealed, he would be here with us today.  Dr. Cheng will be honored by the Orange County Sheriff’s Depart as a hero, however due to the politically charged topic of firearms, the fact that he was a CCW holder will be silent, a request made by his family.  We hope to honor him as one of our own and use this opportunity to remind you all to carry at all times.   You can read Dr. John Cheng’s story here.
